FESTIVALS IN BHUTAN
Bhutan has one of the oldest and well preserved cultures in the world. The Bhutanese society is centered around the practice of Buddhism, which is also its main religion.

Bhutanese people celebrate various festivals, with most being seasonal. But the most commonly celebrated festival here is known as ‘Tshechu’. Tshechu is a religious festival that takes place in several regions of Bhutan as a tribute to Guru Padmasbhava, who is famously known as Guru Rimpoche. He is the saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan and introduced the Nyingma School of Buddhism into Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan in 8th century.

The 10th day of a lunar calendar month is celebrated as Tshechu, to commemorate the birth day Guru Padmasambhava. Tshechus are held usually in temples, monasteries and Dzongs where dances are performed by monks and the locales wearing ornate costumes and masks. Each aspect of the dance has a symbolic meaning and it is widely believed that one gains merit by attending these festivals. Some of the festivals are observed to purify the souls and ward off evil spirit.

The festival is also marked by large markets that congregate at the fair locations adding to the festive fervor.

Tsechu takes place across the country with much pomp and zeal. However, the Thimphu Tsechu and Paro Tsechu are regarded among the biggest of all in terms of participation and audience.

Since most monasteries stage their own Tsechu at different times of the year to honor Guru Rimpoche, there's a festival almost every week.
